Headlander Looks Like One of the Weirdest Games Ever

Everyone loves an indie game, especially when the ethos is: “the weirder, the better”. Based on that criteria, the upcoming Headlander from Double Fine could very well be one of the greatest games ever made.

In case the above trailer has left you a little slack-jawed, it can be summarised pretty simply. You are a head that flies about and looks for robots to attach to. The future is now, people.

Being the last human head in existence, your mission is to boost your way through levels and unlock new abilities to progress, which you accomplish by landing on robot bodies and commandeering them. The game gets progressively harder as time goes on, meaning you have to find stronger bodies – sometimes not even humanoid. You can also attach to robot dogs. So, is this the dotted line I sign on or…

There’s a lot to love from these early glimpses so far. It has a compelling art style, challenging scenarios and a quirkiness that is very welcome in the sea of monochrome releases we have had in the industry lately. I am all for games that are unconventional and retro in the same sentence, so here’s hoping this one is as good as it looks.

According to its synopsis: “You are the last known human in the universe, and all that’s left of you is a disembodied head. Seeking clues to your fractured past, you must travel through a hostile world of machines, using a special helmet that allows you to dock into and take control of any robotic host body. As you launch from one body to the next, you’ll start to discover that things are not quite what they appear to be, and the fate of humanity has yet to be decided…”

Pencilled in for a vague 2016 release, Headlander could well be one to keep an eye out for from a studio that has brought us the likes of Grim Fandango and Broken Age.
