Harry Potter Stage Play Coming Next Year

Enter the boy who lived, stage right. That’s right, J.K. Rowling has revealed plans for a new Harry Potter story in the form of a stage play titled Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

According to Rowling’s Twitter feed the play will be titled Harry and the Cursed Child and is set to open in London next year.

If you’re part of the generation that grew up with Hogwarts you’ll probably be freaking out right about now. Once you’ve finished with that though, you’re probably going to be asking ‘so what is this new story?’

Well, we’re not too sure. Some websites are reporting that the play will follow Harry Potter in his pre-wizarding days, prior to Hogwarts. This seems to be based on comments made by Rowling in 2013.

But today Rowling revealed the play would not be a prequel. Does this mean the new play is something else entirely? Or has someone just advised her that ‘prequel’ is now a dirty word? She wouldn’t be the first person to skirt around the word to avoid all the baggage that comes with it.

The play itself seems to be a collaboration between Rowling and Jack Thorne, notable for his stage adaptation of horror film Let the Right One In.

After the lull since the film release of Deathly Hallows Part Two in 2011, the world of Potter looks set for a resurgence next year. Both the stage play and a new trilogy of films, starring Eddie Redmayne and inspired by Rowling’s spin off book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them are on the horizon for 2016.
