In an interview with Collider, Guillermo Del Toro opened up about his new movie project Nightmare Alley, and it’s “double R rating”, which is basically him scoffing at us for even asking if the movie will be R-rated. Nightmare Alley will be the first Del Toro movie that veers away from the supernatural, going full noir. This aspect was what attracted Del Toro to the project in the first place. He calls it his first chance “to do a real underbelly of society type of movie”. Shooting will begin in January of next year, with Fox Searchlight distributing.

Nightmare Alley is an adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham’s 1946 novel, though it won’t aim to capture the entire thing. Gresham’s book is a saga, while Del Toro’s movie hopes to zoom in on the darker elements encased within the book. Bradley Cooper has signed on to star in the movie, taking on the role that was originally helmed by Tyrone Power in the 1947 film, with Cate Blanchett and Toni Collette in talks to come onboard. Ron Perlman and Richard Jenkins, who Del Toro worked with on Hellboy and The Shape of Water respectively, are also casting possibilities.

Currently, Del Toro is doing press junkets for Scary Movies To Tell in The Dark, which he produced. You can catch the movie in cinemas now.
