God of War Ragnarok: How To Defeat Alva

God of War Ragnarok

God of War Ragnarok boss fights can sometimes get frustrating and Alva is no exception. The player will meet Alva after exploring the Temple of Light in Alfheim during the Groa’s Secret quest.

She’s a very fast elf and learning her movements is crucial to success. Stick close to Alva to deal as much damage using the Leviathan Axe as possible when Alva is vulnerable — this happens after she has attempted a melee attack. Atreus’ sonic arrows will come in useful here as they increase the stun bar and lead to her getting stunned much quicker than if Kratos were to attempt this solo.

When Alva is stunned, use melee attacks for a short while until an R3 prompt appears on screen, which unleashes a combo to deal significant damage. Alva’s main combo can be blocked until her finishing strike, which you will need to shield bash or dodge. Occasionally, Alva will slam her swords into the ground which creates a shockwave that is unblockable. The range is huge, so dodge very far out of the way as soon as the red ring indicators appear. Two dodge rolls work, or sprinting and then rolling.

If you don’t manage to keep Alva at a close distance, her long-ranged projectiles will come for you. A cross-shaped blast must be dodged as it is unblockable, but later in the fight she will send two of these out in a row so be prepared.

Another long-ranged technique Alva has is fusing her two swords together before launching them towards you. The attack can be more easily parried than dodged, but it is very fast. It doesn’t do a dangerous amount of damage but it will leave Kratos vulnerable, so it’s best to parry it if you can.

When a blue ring appears around Alva make sure to shield bash her as soon as possible, otherwise she will heal herself. Alva will then become vulnerable so unleash a melee combo. When a red ring indicator appears around Alva, dodge left or right – not backwards – to avoid a huge beam of light.

When Alva crosses her swords in front of her, she will block all incoming damage and you’ll need to shield bash her to open her up to take more damage. Then it’s just a case of avoiding her attacks whilst inflicting as much damage as possible in order to win the boss fight.

God of War Ragnarok is available on PS5 and PS4.
