God of War Ragnarok: How To Defeat Gryla

God of War Ragnarok

God of War Ragnarok boss fights are plentiful in the new release. Gryla the Giant is one such boss that players will encounter during The Lost Sanctuary quest. Gryla is the main Ironwood boss fight, and beating her will rely more on mental than physical strength. Here’s how to defeat Gryla.

Lock on to Gryla using R3 and keep an eye on when she turns the cauldron around to expose its runes. As you can’t hit her until she is stunned, players first need to deal damage to these purple runes to cause damage. Gryla will throw things from the cauldron towards you so dodge to avoid them. If you get too close to her, she’ll stomp the ground so dodge backwards to avoid taking damage from this attack.

After hitting the runes four times or taking off around two to three bars of health, Gryla will fall to one knee stunned and you can rush forward to deal as much melee damage as possible before she gets back up. A second phase of the fight will then begin which sees Gryla covering the floor in magic flames, forcing Atreus off the ground to avoid them.

Grapple up to a tabletop and entice Gryla over to one of the large candles. If dodging the projectiles she throws and focusing on this is too much – you can also take cover behind objects on the tabletop. The slower projectiles can be shot out of the air to avoid them following Atreus. When the prompt appears, get Agraboda to blow up the candle to cause damage to Gryla.

This will stun Gryla, and gives you another chance to hit the purple runes on her cauldron to cause damage. She will rotate the cauldron so try to stay on the correct side of it whilst dodging the projectiles that she continues to throw towards Atreus. Once she takes a certain amount of damage, Gryla will enter the third phase of the fight.

She will be much more defensive during this phase, so luring her to the candles before getting Agraboda to blow them up is the most effective way of dealing damage and opening the cauldron up for the runes to be hit. You may need to swing between the various tabletops to get a better angle at which to attack the cauldron’s runes. Dodging and jumping up and down from the tabletops is the most effective way to avoid the magical floor. When she reaches one bar of health remaining, you can rush towards Gryla and press the R3 prompt to end the fight.

God of War Ragnarok is available on PS5 and PS4.
