Gearbox Temporarily Revives Gigantic In A ‘Limited Time Throwback Event’ After 5 Years Of Closure

Gigantic

After Motiga, the development studio of the free-to-play MOBA hero-shooter Gigantic, closed down for good in 2017, a recent update from Gearbox has seen a limited-time event breathe new life into the game.

Gigantic released exclusively on Xbox and PC before Motiga had to pull the plug on it after struggling to make it float in a competitive market.

Then, in 2021, Embracer Group acquired Perfect World, the publishers of Gigantic, and renamed the company to Gearbox Publishing. During this process, Perfect World still held ownership to Gigantic, which was transferred to them in the deal.

Fans were pleasantly surprised to receive an email from Gearbox Publishing yesterday inviting them to play Gigantic’s new limited-time throwback event, with many fans in the Gigantic subreddit expressing their excitement for the game’s revival.

The event will run from October 5th till the 7th and includes a portion of Gigantic’s fan-favourite features from its full release, such as returning heroes and maps. Most interesting of all, the new event brings ‘some never-before-seen features’ according to the email that will no doubt revitalise some of the veteran fans’ experiences with this game. This includes a revamped progression system, new loadout and customisation options, and a new Rush game mode that promises to be a more streamlined, fast-paced, and beginner-friendly option.

If you’ve never played Gigantic but want to check it out, there might be a way to access it even though it’s listed as a private event. According to fans, you can create a new account and start playing when the event goes live, which may be possible despite the game not being listed on the Arc Store at this time.

Now that Gearbox owns Gigantic, it seems more likely than ever that the game could be fully revived post-launch of the limited-time event, and fans seem to be on board, with one Reddit user saying, “Everyone who got this email, play, pay, do everything you can to show support!”
