How Much is a GameCube Worth in 2023?

Few older consoles have enjoyed a resurgence quite like the GameCube since the retro gaming boom that kicked off in 2020. While Nintendo’s console always had its dedicated fans, the reality is that it was quite the failure despite boasting some of the greatest games of all time. With a new appreciation for a console that was always just a little poorly marketed and supported by third-party publishers, there’s a lot of people out there that want to pay a high price for relatively low print releases, but how much should the GameCube itself cost you?

Before we get into prices, bear in mind that the used console market is always changing. We will be regularly checking in with this guide to make sure GameCube prices listed here reflect the market.

Basic GameCube Console Prices

Indigo GameCube

The good news when it comes to the worth of a GameCube is that they’re far more common and affordable than the games themselves, likely due to just how durable the console is. Nintendo designed the GameCube to last, as you will rarely ever hear of system failures, even all these years on from its release in 2001.

If you want just the default indigo (purple) GameCube (DOL-001) with a controller but without its original box, these should set you back £60-£80 in the UK and around $75-$100 in the US. The condition of the console will likely define the asking price.

There are other versions of the GameCube that are worth looking into for collectors, though there aren’t nearly as many variants as other consoles from the time, especially the PS2. The DOL-001 is typically associated with the indigo GameCube, but there’s also the revised and later released DOL-101 models of the GameCube, which removed the Digital AV Out port, meaning that their resolutions won’t look as good on modern setups. You also cannot use some versions of Action Replay and other tools with the newer GameCube, and the faceplate on top of the console is a bit trickier to remove.

If you’re going to get one model of the GameCube, consider getting the original DOL-001, even if the DOL-101 is available for cheaper (though they’re typically the same price).

There are other retail versions of the GameCube out there too, though they are mostly only different in colour and what game they were bundled with.

The limited edition PAL exclusive Resident Evil 4 GameCube that comes with a special console design and controller is the most expensive GameCube model there is, and simply unboxed should cost you £100+ in the UK and $150 in the US. Getting this model boxed along with the controller is actually extremely expensive, costing £200+ in the UK and $300+ in the US.

Remember that the GameCube is region locked; this console won’t work with NTSC games if you’re in the US.

Other varieties of the GameCube itself are simply recolours, but the Pearl White and Platinum shouldn’t cost much more than the unboxed Indigo GameCube. You can also get a simple Black GameCube which seems to sell for even less than the Indigo. These all have pretty wildly different prices they go for, but ultimately shouldn’t break the bank, though the PAL only Pearl White version is fairly pricey boxed at £175+.

Panasonic Q GameCube Prices

There is one other notable version of the GameCube, though it was only officially released in Japan. The Panasonic Q GameCube came with the ability to play DVDs, audio CDs, and even MP3s, but as less than 100,000 units were shipped (and even less than that made their way over to the west) and they seem to have a lot of technical issues, you should expect to pay a premium.

Unboxed, the Panasonic Q sells for $500-$1000, but if you’re wanting a boxed version, you’re going to have to shell out close to $2000, which doesn’t also factor shipping costs. Even in parts only condition, the GameCube Panasonic Q still fairly regularly sells for $400-$500. In the UK, the GameCube Panasonic sells so occasionally that it’s hard to get a true estimate of its worth, but a graded version of it sold for a frankly silly £3,150 as recently as February 2023.

GameCube Controller Prices

As for the controller, it really depends on if you want one that is wireless or not, and if you need it to be official. The regular GameCube controller should cost you roughly $35/£25 if you’re shopping frugally, but if you need the WaveBird, you’re going to be paying close to £100/$100. However, you can get unofficial wireless controllers for the GameCube for far less and they do as good a job, really.
