‘Fan Ho: A Hong Kong Memoir’ is a Stunning Look at China of Old

Critically acclaimed photographer, director, and actor, Fan Ho moved to Hong Kong with his family in 1949. Not long after he began capturing the sights of urban Hong Kong life. From slums and alleyways to markets and main streets, Fan Ho’s photography chronicled the development of Hong Kong into a major metropolitan city through the 50s and 60s. This particular period of Fan Ho’s has been collected, and is going to be published in a book called ‘Fan Ho: A Hong Kong Memoir’.

The photos that Fan Ho took of Hong Kong are pretty astonishing, highlighting all walks of Hong Kong life from bottom to top and old to young. It’s not just the gritty, urbane subject matter that is highlighted through Ho’s photography that makes his work so impressive, but how the compositions of his photos capture, and emphasise, some stunning scenery bringing out the beauty in the gritty city. Oh, and I should also add that when Fan Ho moved to Hong Kong in 1949, he was just 12. Yeah…

Anyway, here’s a few photos from those years for you to have a good old peer at.
