Why We Should Embrace New Music Technology

I’ve had countless arguments with family members and fellow peers on why music changing is a good thing. Synths, recording studios being maxed out to the best quality possible, new microphones and everything else to go along with it makes me feel excited to see what musicians use to create a new sound.

We all have that artist or band that we never want to change and the idea of their sound changing frightens us. For me, it’s Mumford and Sons. They just released their new single ‘Believe’ off of their upcoming album Wilder Minds and it’s…different. Mumford and Sons are known for their folk sound and I’m not going to lie; they are the reason I bought a banjo. When they came out of their hiatus using electric guitars and keyboards with no sight of a banjo on the horizon I nearly passed out. WHAT HAD THEY DONE? THIS IS IT. IT’S OVER.

I just had to calm down and listen.

However the controversy surrounding their new sound has blown me away. I knew people loved their folk sound but I thought people would love their electric sound even more yet I was wrong. I agree it was scary but Believe is a good song. It’s got me excited to see the compilation that will be Wilder Minds.

As mentioned before, I’ve had many debates about new technology within music. I’m on the side that it should be used and adored within the industry as its advances have created genres and sub-genres and so we no longer have “just indie music” but indie-electronic, dance, house music and many others. I’ve always had country music be my preferred genre but the new sound that artists are creating is unbelievable. It makes me feel like they are progressing from their other albums and moving forward as it doesn’t always have to sound futuristic but it can be how a musician or producer manipulates an instrument to create a different tone within a song. It can be used to create a better live performance, a different emotion and most importantly a new era of music.

We have the 1950’s, 60’s, 70’s and so on. Why not use technology to create our own generation? It doesn’t have to be dance music and rave shows that dominate it as we are the first generation to have knowledge so advanced within the technology industry and sector, so why not use it for the greater good?

Many people feel this technology is a way of auto-tuning everything and that’s the only tool you can use on a sound desk, but I can assure you, it isn’t. I used to think the same until artists did use technology and synths to create a new feeling towards their music. There is now a vocal synthesizer and hologram called Hatsune Miku performing across the world. These shows are literally voiced synths and holograms. That is a new step in the entertainment, music and technology world.

I’m not suggesting we all go out and buy synths and microphones and start our Years and Years-like band, but I do suggest more people become open to the idea of a changing music industry and the magnificent sounds it can create.
