According to Deadline, Disney are exploring the possibilities of rebooting its billion dollar franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean. Disney has reportedly met with the writing duo behind the Deadpool duology, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who are both in talks to pen the script for the reboot.

Producer of the franchise Jerry Bruckheimer will remain onboard (no pun intended) for future instalments, however there is no news on any other cast or crew member returning, which includes Johnny Depp, the face of Captain Jack Sparrow who made the role his own.

The initial five films grossed an incredible $4.5 billion over the course of 14 years, however it is no surprise that Disney are contemplating starting from scratch considering the negative reception of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in 2011 and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017, the latter being the lowest grossing film in the franchise by $70 million.

This news comes in just two months after it was confirmed that Pirates of the Caribbean 6 was in development with Joachim Rønning to return and direct after filming Maleficent 2. The script was apparently also being written by Ted Elliot, Terry Rosio and Jeff Nathanson. It is unknown whether this is being scrapped in favour of a reboot for the franchise.
