Daily Tune: Saint Clair – Amnesiac

Emma Topolski, aka Saint Clair, has an impressive CV. She’s spent the past few years playing in Laura Marling’s band, and was also involved with Marling’s Reversal of the Muse podcast, which brought together an incredible roster of female musicians, sound engineers and producers to offer more insight into what it’s like being a woman in the music industry. Topolski has also put in time with Ghostpoet and she’s the bassist for alt-rock band Childcare.

As Saint Clair, she lets her voice run over a kind of raw but considered electronic production, characterised by slow, determined percussion and light, minimalist melodies. On this new track, Amnesiac, the production comes courtesy of altopalo bandmember and recent Terrible Records recruit, Rahm. Terrible Records are very, very good at earmarking new talent early, so their interest in Rahm is a very good sign and his work on this track is excellent. The rises are powerful, but never overwhelming and the beat allows the vocals to drift in and out in slow, undulating waves even when things get more intense.

Amnesiac is the first single from Topolski’s imminent second EP, D2, which is due out on the 2nd of November, via her very own label, Dearly Beloved. Like many rising solo acts, Topolski cut her teeth singing jazz in places where you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who actually gave a shit about the music before eventually coming to the attention of people like Marling and Bastille (who she recently toured with). Both her and Rahm are well worthy of your attention.
