Daily Tune: Lawrence Rothman – Stand By

Lawrence Rothman is a fascinating character. First emerging a few years ago, Rothman has been compared to Tyler, the Creator, Leonard Cohen in sound and dozens of others in appearance. Rothman is truly a chameleon, adopting such a litany of fashion trends and style that they’re virtually unrecognisable from photo to photo.

As such, Rothman is also gender fluid, a subject which runs through the core of their upcoming debut album, The Book of Law, set to drop on the 3rd of November. Having announced their gender fluidity to an unaccepting father, Rothman went into a state of severe depression, resulting in the formulation of nine different alter egos, all of which feature on the album.

This new track, Stand By, deals with the ill-fated conversation, which had to be done over the phone when Rothman’s flight home was delayed. In terms of musical style, it was all the trappings of LA’s ever expanding R&B scene, but with the kind of heartfelt, crackling lyrics that you might have heard coming out of John Martyn or even David Bowie 20 or 30 years ago.

Rothman doesn’t stand alone on the track though. It was all put together by mega-producers Justin Raisen and Sad Pony (Angel Olsen, Charlie XCX, Kim Gordon, Santigold, Ariel Pink) and features Thundercat keyboardist Dennis Hamm and longtime Prince and D’Angelo bass player Pino Palladino. It is, in all respects, a beautiful, haunting piece of music. Keep an eye out for the full album in a few weeks.
