Chris Rock To Guide the Vision For SAW Spin-off

“I do what I can do when I can do it.” - Chris Rock

In some unexpected news out of Cannes, Bloody Disgusting reports that Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures announced a new entry into the SAW franchise, with Chris Rock guiding the concept of the spin-off into the series. Darren Lyn Bousman, who directed the three sequels after James Wan’s original hit, will be back in the director’s chair once more. The screenplay is in the hands of Jigsaw writers Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg.

Rock has been a fan of the franchise since he saw the first film in 2004, which explains why he has gotten involved in this project. According to Lionsgate’s chairman Joe Drake, the world Rock described was so chillingly good that they were invested the moment they heard his idea.

It is unclear as to whether Rock will take on an acting role, but he is serving as executive producer, along with Daniel Heffner (a long-time SAW executive producer), James Wan and Leigh Whannell (who wrote and starred in the first SAW). They are aiming for an October 2020 release date.

Given Jordan Peele’s turn to horror after years of comedy, maybe it does make sense that a comedian like Chris Rock would be able to scare the living daylights out of us. If they know how to make us laugh, then the inverse is also possible. Guess we will find out in 2020.
