Woody Allen’s Café Society Has a New Trailer

Another year, another Woody Allen film, another comment about a return to form.

Although he has been busy working on an as yet untitled TV project for Netflix (his first foray into TV), this first trailer suggests this might be one of his better late-period pieces.

Following the mixed reviews of Irrational Man, this latest work sees Allen once again taking a step back in time to the 1930s, which immediately brings with it thoughts of 2014 misfire Magic in the Moonlight.

However, from what we see here, this seems like it will be a lot better. The quips are funny, everyone looks comfortable (unlike Emma Stone and Colin Firth’s stilted chemistry in MitM), and it looks beautiful, capturing the glitz, glamour and grime of the two sides of 1930s America.

Of course, it has an all-star cast. Jesse Eisenberg makes his second appearance in an Allen film (after 2012’s To Rome With Love), and his third with Allen debutant Kristen Stewart (who appeared together in Adventureland and American Ultra). Steve Carell (who replaced Bruce Willis at the last minute) makes his second appearance (after Melinda and Melinda) as does Parker Posey (Irrational Man).

As always, it is too early to tell, but this might be yet another return to form for the veteran filmmaker, and hopefully a good indication of the quality of his upcoming TV show.
