Bye Bye, University

Maria Eastwood writes about the sense of anti-climax after finishing university.

So, I have just completed my three years at University, technically, and feel varied about this. After handing my art work portfolio in only two days ago, I feel that my life is open now to many, many different ideas. Too many options.

I feel that I may not be alone in these feelings but being surrounded by many creative and talented people is always a drive and now that is taken away. It’s hard to switch off to the idea of becoming a world known illustrator when I might just be pulling pints for the next few years.

The journey has been up and down and now I have finished I feel like I am flat-lining. There are many jobs needing experience in the field of work I want to get into but by doing university I haven’t been able to do any experience so I feel like I am back at square one. So even though one worry has gone another has become very apparent.

I really enjoyed the first year of university but the last two years have been unfortunate and long but not supportive from teachers at all. I suppose this post is about the honest view of university.

It is, in my opinion, a waste of money and time especially in the design business where things become out of date extremely fast it’s hard to catch up when part of an old system. The only positive of being at university is being able to say you have completed it shows dedication and being able to apply yourself. Also, when networking, it’s definitely a foot in the door.

The money involved in the whole three years is incredible really, especially a hands on course because it just takes all the money to make things look incredible. I have looked back and realised I have probably almost spent £10,000 in the last 3 years, so it’s definitely an investment.

I went to university because I wasn’t ready for real world graphics. I thought it would prepare me but I feel it has made me further down the scale and three years behind. I have built a strong portfolio but I could have gone to night school for that.

C’est La vie.
