As part of Gamescom 2021, publisher Team17 and developer Drop Bear Bytes have confirmed development on an upcoming post-apocalyptic RPG, Broken Roads. The title presents “an original and narrative-rich, isometric, turn-based role-playing game” set in a harsh, dangerous post-society world in Western Australia, complete with real-world landmarks and locations.

What Is Broken Roads?

Broken Roads is a turn-based RPG game wherein players must try and scrape together a life in a scoured landscape. Along with traditional turn-based combat, Broken Roads also places an emphasis on decision making and negotiation tactics in how players approach situations in their own style.

A press release reads, “At the heart of Broken Roads’ thoughtful and mature storylines is a deep and meaningful morality system – the Moral Compass – that influences quests, dialogue, and character development.” There are four major philosophies to follow: Humanist, Utilitarian, Machiavellian, and Nihilist, each with distinct benefits, costs, and traits. The accumulation of players’ choices during a playthrough will alter quests and plot events.

A clear influence appears to be the original Fallout games, as well as other CRPG standouts like Planescape Torment or the recent Disco Elysium.

When Does Broken Roads Come Out?

Broken Roads is scheduled for release on PC and Consoles in 2022. The game’s Steam page is up and available to Wishlist.
