Why is Big Show Wrestling Shaq at Wrestlemania 33?

Big Show vs Shaq

In case you missed it earlier this week, Big Show challenged Shaq to a match at Wrestlemania 33 after years of on-screen animosity. In the video announcement, the two looked like best friends, despite them going at each other like the pair of genetically-engineered monsters that they have on WWE TV ever since 2009 when they first met.

With it now looking almost certain that Big Show and Shaq will square off on the grandest stage of them all, the biggest question is also the simplest: why?

If this were to happen five years ago, people might be mildly interested in the nonsense that it is, eager to watch the silliness two really big gentlemen hold each other for five minutes. The simple fact is that the WWE has evolved, it’s no longer so much about gimmicks as it is genuine wrestling talent and “real” storylines. Having Shaq and Show take up precious time on what is always a packed card is going to take away a match from performers who have been there all year long, busting their asses to just be in with a chance.

That’s without even remembering that this isn’t even the first time Show has been involved in a gimmicky or celebrity match at Wrestlemania. He lost to Akebono in a sumo wrestling contest at Wrestlemania 21 because why not. At Wrestlemania 25, he was also beaten by Floyd Mayweather, Jr because, again, why the fuck not. Add to this the fact that Vince likes to make him pretend to be Hulk Hogan and forces him to be in bad movies like Knucklehead and you have to think that WWE might not respect him all that much. You and I both know he’s going to lose against Shaq.

WWE can do a lot better than two huge dudes hugging each other at their biggest event of the year. Let’s hope that both of them are dressed as sumo wrestlers boxing gloves on to really push the sideshow that it is.
