Respawn Entertainment have officially revealed Apex Legends, their new free-to-play battle royale shooter that’s available right now on PS4, Xbox One and PC. While on the surface, it might look like any other battle royale experience, Apex Legends appears to be focused more on squad play than any other game. Squads of 3 compete to get that win in fast paced FPS combat.

It’s not just the squad focus that’ll set the game apart, as players pick from different legends with various abilities that set them apart from the rest, and all legends will be fully customisable. As for gameplay, players can respawn if their tag is recovered within a certain amount of time, meaning you don’t necessarily have to wait for 20 minutes while your squadmates play on.

Respawn seems to have done enough to differentiate Apex Legends from the rest of the battle royale genre, and they’re currently planning to support the game for the upcoming year with new seasons, legends, weapons and more. Whether or not Apex Legends will be able to carve out a permanent niche for itself will remain to be seen, but it’s free to play. May as well give it a try, right?
