Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey: How To Evolve

Monkey see, monkey's great grandchildren do.

Ancestors game review

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a game all about our beginnings, teaching hominids how to become homo sapiens through breeding and experience. Evolving is the most important and central mechanic of Ancestors, but it’s not something you can do at will.

Evolving will take you forward by potentially hundreds of thousands of years, bringing you back as a new clan who are also a new species. However, there’s a lot of legwork involved before you can evolve in Ancestors. Here are some of the things you need to be aware of.

Ancestors Evolution

– You must be in your clan’s active Settlement, and you must also have a bed.
– You must have already passed a Generation.
– You must have completed an Evolution Feat.

Once you’ve passed all the criteria, it’s actually quite straightforward to evolve in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey. That said, you will need to have stacked up quite a few feats to make it a meaningful evolution.

To evolve, simply approach your bed in your settlement, lie down with A and then press Y to move for “Evolution”.

From here, go to the left with LB until you come across the Evolution screen itself. If you’ve done everything you need to, you should be able to press Y on this screen to evolve.

You will then go to a screen which shows how much you have evolved ahead of or behind science based on what you’ve accomplished via “feats”. Feats are essentially things you do that progress your species, such as using a tool for the first time in a specific way or visiting somewhere new. The more you accomplish, the further you will evolve.

Ancestors tips

If you evolve a significant amount or keep grinding until a couple million years have passed, you will then evolve into a different species.

Ancestors review

Evolving into a new species in Ancestors results in you earning new, permanent abilities, as well as enhancements to the ones you already have, and also a change in appearance. Your hominid should slowly but surely become more upright and also be able to stand on two feet for longer periods of time.

You have eight million years of evolution in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey to get through. How well can you do?

From our Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey review:

For a game about the beginning of us all, there’s a bit of irony in Ancestors being at its best in its own beginning before losing its way. The marvel of evolution gives way to a gameplay loop that quickly irritates without enough variety to spice it up, which, when combined with poor combat, fiddly controls, and repetitive crafting, all add up to an experience that might drive you bananas.
