A New Dirty Dancing Movie With Jennifer Grey Has Been Confirmed

It's time for us to have the time of our lives...again.

It’s been a busy time for Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer. He has just confirmed that John Wick 5 has the greenlight and will be shot back to back with the fourth film. According to Deadline, he also announced that a new Dirty Dancing movie, starring Jennifer Grey (she is also producing), will be moving forward. He called it “one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood” since news of this movie has already been floating around since July.

Jonathan Levine will be directing, and this is a strong choice given his body of work, which includes films like Long Shot and Warm Bodies. The screenplay will be penned by the writing team of Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis, the same pair who worked on Five Feet Apart. It’s quite clear that all the major players for this film have worked on romance narratives before, so hopefully they can create a Dirty Dancing film that becomes a cultural staple, much like its predecessor.

This is not the first attempt at another Dirty Dancing film. In 2004, we had Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, which isn’t a sequel per se but exists in the same universe since Patrick Swayze is in it. Then we got the abysmal remake in 2017, a remake that should never be spoken of because it is so horrible, but inevitably gets mentioned every time we talk about Dirty Dancing.

Let’s hope this new film will forever erase that remake from our cultural consciousness.
