He may be the main villain of Avengers: Infinity War, but a dedicated community of fans have decided that Thanos was not a bad guy. So much so that they created a subreddit called r/ThanosDidNothingWrong, and to express their admiration of the Mad Titan, they decided to ban half of their 600,000 members, just as Thanos ended half of all life in the universe. According to the BBC, this makes the stunt the biggest Reddit ban in history.
The ban was implemented yesterday, and resulted in the removal of around 300,000 accounts. Avengers: Infinity War director Joe Russo even joined the subreddit, and when the ban commenced, he uploaded an Instagram video of a shirtless Josh Brolin snapping his fingers, just as he did in the movie, although thankfully, Thanos was fully clothed. Anyone who’s seen Watchmen will never want to look at another naked blue character in a superhero movie again.
Many fans actually joined the subreddit just so they could be banned, with some of them even betting on whether they would be allowed to stay. The ban was broadcast via a Twitch stream, with many of the banned account members going on to join the appropriately named r/InTheSoulStone subreddit. And just as Thanos did in the film, The-Jedi-Apprentice, who moderated the original r/ThanosDidNothingWrong subreddit, announced that he plans to step down now that his work is complete, so that he can “watch the sun rise on a grateful universe.”
The next Avengers film opens on May 3, 2019, with Brolin returning as Thanos. And if Thor doesn’t fulfill his promise of whacking him over the head, the Mad Titan may end up being mobbed to death by hoards of angry dog owners, as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that half of all animal life also ended when he snapped his fingers. Thanos must not be a dog person, or a cat person, or even a goldfish person. Either way, with Infinity War now being the fourth highest-grossing film of all time, we can safely expect the next entry to also be a huge hit. Disney are probably glad that half of the moviegoers in the world have not been turned to dust.
