PlayStation 4 Will Never Be Backwards Compatible with PlayStation 3

Having traversed the iffy loading times and considerable quality drop that comes with PlayStation Now, I have recently been pining for a chance to play games on my PS4 the traditional way. Unless you’re in a high-quality broadband area, PlayStation Now seems like it’s going to be a stretch too far for those not wanting to spend extra money for a spotty gaming experience that somehow lacks the actual charm of loading up a disc from a PlayStation 3.

Considering how smart Microsoft have been to incorporate backwards compatibility with the Xbox One, it would make send for Sony to follow suit. However, considering how hard they have gone in on Now, it was always a stretch to ask that they just outright made it so you could play your PS3 discs in your PS4. Unfortunately, Sony Worldwide boss Shuhei Yoshida has shot down hopes with a simple “no”.

Well, shit. That’s pretty definitive. The PlayStation 3 under my television makes noises like its death throes whenever I turn it on and I don’t want to really pay £12.99 a month on top of my PlayStation Plus subscription for something that’s a weak alternative.

Unless Sony really improve their Now service, their lack of backwards compatibility is just going to prove to be a big negative when it comes to deciding which new console to buy. As the pricing is now more competitive than ever between the Xbox One and PS4, it could be the thing that makes up the minds of consumers.
