Single of the Week: Tessera Skies – ‘Out of Sight’

As the actual skies are starting to keep themselves more consistently clear, with summer doing its stretches and limbering up for its seasonal shift, what better time to turn to Tessera Skies for some new music to ring it in with, which they so graciously oblige with their latest track, and our SINGLE OF THE WEEK, ‘Out of Sight’ – a song perfectly suited to soundtracking your lost gaze as you lay back on a towel at the beach, on grass in the countryside, on a deckchair poolside, or anywhere you can look skywards and let its baby blue capture your attention whole as sporadic clouds drift dreamily by and the sun makes its journey across the sky.

Tessera Skies, you may remember from their previous appearances here at CULTURED VULTURES; first cropping up in an PREVIOUS EDITION of PULSE, before a spot of getting to know with a YOUR NEW FAVOURITE BAND Q&A. However, for those unfamiliar, and just too gosh darn lazy to click either of those links just then; Tessera Skies are a three piece what come from Newcastle who casually create artistic dreamscapes all within the confines of pop. The band have drawn comparisons to the likes of Beach House and The Antlers with their penchant for pop and atmospherics.

With their latest single, the aforementioned ‘Out of Sight’, the band continue to explore to this ambition, ambient, and ambidextrous territory to great effect, channelling a sound altogether more focussed and concise in its composition, and yet very much adrift ethereal. The instrumentation is layered and dense, but in the light, and airy way that a cloud might be, were you to stand in the middle of one. It’s all very hazy and dreamlike, but the song itself is structured and considered so as not to get lost in its own mist and instead deliver a great synthy single. Speaking of which, there’s a synth sound at play here that reminds me of Future Islands a little, and it’s just great.

Anyhow, ‘Out of Sight’ is our, and by proxy your, SINGLE OF THE WEEK, so take it with you to the beach, the countryside, the poolside, the garden, or anywhere, and listen to it as you stare passed the sky long into the night.
