5 Games To Play Ahead of Just Cause 4

Just Cause 4
Just Cause 4

Rico’s maddest dance yet is on the way with Just Cause 4 set to launch later in 2018. While it doesn’t look like reinventing the madcap antics and ridiculousness of its predecessors, it’s shaping up to be more of the same goodness that it’s built its name on, if not even more so.

Tornadoes, a bigger scale, and a villain who may actually be memorable are just a few of the things to look forward to from Just Cause 4. Even if it’s by no means a perfect franchise, there’s always something cathartic about exploring massive, beautiful islands before attaching rockets to cows. You have to make your own fun sometimes.

With Just Cause 4 still a little while away, we decided to pick out some games to tide you over until then. Below you’ll find a bunch of games that promote freedom and causing a bit of a ruckus.

1. Just Cause 3

Developer: Avalanche Studios
Publisher: Square Enix
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1

There’s nothing wrong with being obvious, right? Just Cause 3 might suffer from some technical issues, but if you can overlook them and get to the meat and potatoes of the game — pulling off ridiculous stunts and causing mass destruction — you’ll be in for a whale of a time. Even better, it’s available for a pittance on basically all of its platforms.

2. Marvel’s Spider-Man

Marvel's Spider-Man

Developer: Insomniac Games
Publisher: SIE
Platform(s): PS4

If there’s anyone that can match the verticality found in Just Cause, it’s Spidey. While he may not be able to web-swing up to helicopters, kill the pilot, and then take the ride as his own, he doesn’t need to. Swinging around a photorealistic New York City is weirdly cathartic and just enjoyable, even if you’re aimlessly wandering. You can also stop crime and that, but finding all the backpacks is just simply much more important.

3. Mercenaries 2: World In Flames

Developer: Pandemic Studios
Publisher: EA
Platform(s): PC, PS3, PS2, 360

Arguably the progenitor of providing big explodable environments for players, Mercenaries is simply crying out for a modern update. There’s a storyline here, but never mind any of that: you’re going to detonate plenty of buildings and look good while doing it. A really underrated gem of the last generation, though you may need to dig out an older console or *shudders* use Origin to experience it.

4. Saints Row IV

Saints Row 4

Developer: Volition
Publisher: Deep Silver
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS3, XB1, 360

While there may be some arguments to be made about it completely jumping the shark, Saints Row IV is still the perfect cousin to Just Cause, like what would happen if Avalanche just took things too far. Featuring what are basically superpowers and a completely irreverent tone, Saints Row IV can provide a very good distraction if nothing else. Also, in regards to Just Cause and Saints Row: you just have to feel for the people who worked on the cars.

5. Far Cry 3

Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS3, XB1, 360

Another game in which you visit a beautiful part of the world and proceed to ruin everything, Far Cry 3 is an open world FPS in which you play as a deeply unlikable butthole imbued with tribal powers. Setpieces include one in which you burn down weed crops with a flamethrower as dubstep plays in the background, as well as many thrilling confrontations with one of the best video game baddies ever, Vaas. We have no idea why you haven’t played the best Far Cry game yet, but you really should.

Just Cause 4 releases on December 4th, 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
