It’s less than one week until folks gather to watch movies, attend panels, party their asses off, and so much more at the Ninth Annual Milwaukee Film Festival. The nonprofit organization Milwaukee Film puts on the annual festival, alongside host member screenings at the Oriental Theatre and recently established the newly minted Milwaukee Filmmaker Alliance to name a few. In other words, Milwaukee Film has produced a thriving film related community in Milwaukee.
Prior to the fifteen day festival, Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin presented the Cine Sin Fronteras Kickoff Party and the Black Lens Kickoff Party at 88Nine Radio Milwaukee to preview and showcase their perspective programs.
The event displayed the trailers featured in the Black Lens program, alongside some music to dance to following the presentation and mingling with the programmers Geraud Blanks and Donte McFadden, the community partners, and the like. This is best method to get excited and prepare to attend the festival.
From fiction narratives to documentaries, the Black Lens program offers something for everyone. The film lineup includes “72 Hours: A Brooklyn Love Story”, “Acorn and the Firestorm”, “Destined”, “Let It Fall: Los Angeles 1982-1992”, “Like Cotton Twines”, “Love Jones”, “Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities”, and “Unrest”. The two shorts programs feature a myriad of stories that explore family, gun violence, classic folklore, and self-acceptance.
The Black Lens Kickoff Party also previewed Erik Ljung’s “The Blood is at the Doorstep” (the festival’s centerpiece film), a documentary about Dontre Hamilton being shot in broad daylight in Milwaukee and the Hamilton family coming to terms with the devastating tragedy.
From September 28 to October 12, the 2017 Milwaukee Film Festival will take place at the Oriental Theatre (2230 North Farwell Avenue in Milwaukee’s Upper East Side), the Downer Theatre (2589 North Downer Avenue in Milwaukee’s Upper East Side), the Avalon Atmospheric Lounge , the Fox Bay Cinema Grill , and the Times Cinema.
