13 Reasons Why: 5 Big Questions We Need Answering

Arguably the most controversial show on TV in recent years, Netflix dropped a teaser trailer earlier confirming that 13 Reasons Why has been officially renewed for a third season.

The show follows the lives of various teenagers in the aftermath of the tragic suicide of Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), exploring how each are connected and ultimately responsible for her death through audio tapes recorded by Hannah prior to her death.

Since the first season, 13 Reasons has been swarmed with debate over its choice to show Hannah take her own life in graphic fashion, with many feeling the show glamorised suicide, leading to the second season beginning with a PSA from the cast about the topic ( not to mention the show’s depiction of rape and drug use). The second season, however, has been received particularly poorly by critics, with Rotten Tomatoes currently holding the season at a score of 27% at the time of writing.

By the end of the second season, though, there were many unresolved threads left after the mystery of the polaroids and the trial of Hannah Baker’s mother and Liberty High School were settled.

Whether you love the show or loathe it, there is no denying that everyone is talking about it and with that said, here are five of the biggest questions that we’ll want answers to when 13 Reasons Why returns in 2019.

1. The Tyler Situation

Season two ended with one heck of a gripping cliffhanger, the seeds of which had been planted ever since the end of season one, when Tyler (Devin Druid) descended upon Liberty High, armed to the teeth and ready to gun down everybody in sight.

For a moment, it seemed as if Tyler may have been heading towards the same fate as Hannah, with any small ray of hope, friendships and courtship, snuffed out, the school ignoring his high-risk status and, of course, that scene in the bathroom.

Clay (Dylan Minnette) was able to talk Tyler down from a school shooting, before Tony (Christian Navarro) gets him away in his car moments prior to the police arriving at the school, leaving a shocked Clay holding an assault rifle.

The question now is what next for Tyler? Surely the cops will be on the lookout for him, but how exactly does someone come back from such a devastating brink? And Will he get his revenge on Timothy Granaderos’s Montgomery?

2. Bryce and Chloe

The culmination of the legal battle between Hannah’s mother and Liberty High School evolves into an opportunity for Bryce (Justin Prentice) to finally be exposed as the monster he is. However, even with Clay capturing his confession in season one and Jessica (Alisha Boe) and Justin’s (Brandon Flynn) joint testimony to his crimes, Bryce still manages to walk away with a pitiful three month probation. Bryce also reveals he is transferring schools, essentially getting away with all he has done and being able to start over.

In the last episode of season two, Chloe (Anne Winters) tearfully reveals to Jessica that she is pregnant, likely by Bryce. Chloe was unable to testify against Bryce in court and, out of fear, stays by his side. With the huge curveball of pregnancy, will Chloe choose to raise a baby with the person she knows raped her?

In a previous interview about season two with Entertainment Weekly, Justin Prentice spoke about the storyline, offering his opinion on what we could see in season three: ”I think [the topic of abortion could be covered] and it would be interesting to see how they handle it, because from my point of view, Bryce comes from a powerful family and they have a way of making things disappear, so I don’t know.”

3. Justin

Justin had a pretty big arc in season two, from living on the streets to finally coming forward to help Jessica in her time of need, even at the expense of serving more time in prison than Bryce and getting adopted by Clay’s family, finding people who care about him after struggling in so many areas of his own life.

However, despite all the support and acceptance, Justin is still secretly using drugs by the end of season two, showing he still has a way to go yet. If that wasn’t enough, it would also appear that Justin hasn’t quite escaped his previous life, with his mother’s abusive boyfriend Seth (Matthew Alan) seen staring at him whilst everyone is at Monet’s cafe after Hannah’s wake.

You’d be lying if you said you were not rooting for Justin by the end of season two, so we’ll have to wait until 2019 to see what’s next for your new favourite Jensen.

4.Jessica

Jessica also had a huge season, finally coming to terms with the assault she suffered and finding the strength to face her attacker Bryce in court.

In the midst of this, Jessica finds herself in a love triangle by the end of season, rebuilding bridges with Alex (Miles Heizer) but still holding feelings for Justin, with the two reconciling and having sex at the school dance.

Jessica is finding her confidence again, emerging from the darkest point in her life and has two very different people in Alex and Justin who both love her. Will Jessica continue to renew her relationship with Alex or return to Justin, with whom the pair have been through so much, if at all?

5. Clay

The first and second seasons of 13 Reasons Why saw Clay trying to put together the tragic tale of Hannah Baker and make sense of the suicide of the woman he loved.

By the finale of season two, Clay is finally able to find a sense of closure and let go of Hannah (Katherine Langford seemingly confirming on an Instagram post that she would not be returning to the show either). The question now is: what next for Helmet?

Now he has moved on, will he be able to go after Skye (Sosie Bacon) after Hannah’s memory haunted him? I suppose the more pressing question will be what will happen to Clay immediately following the events of season two’s end – with a rifle in hand and the police fast-approaching, will the law think Clay intended to attack the school? Clay does have a history of shooting bottles with Tyler, after all. Lest we forget he very, very nearly pulled the trigger against Bryce until Justin intervened.

Will he cover for Tyler and/or have to explain how Tyler escaped with Tony? Heck, what will happen to Tony as a result, considering he’s also on probation?

Clay looks to be in an even worse place as the credits roll on season two than he has been in before. The answers to these character’s situations, our questions and more – we’ll have to wait until 2019 for answers.
