10 Games to Look out For in 2015

2014 was a year in gaming that brought a lot to the table but didn’t necessarily deliver gourmet meals. The new generation of consoles scrapped for top position in the gaming charts, with Playstation 4 and Xbox One engaging in a spirited battle, whilst the WiiU flailed about despondently like a magikarp on dry land.

After such a shaky year, 2015 promises far more. Each company is gaining a more solid footing, and long term projects are coming to fruition. Here’s our top picks of the upcoming releases, and why we think you’ll be wanting to take them home.

1. Arkham Knight (Warner Bros/TBD/PS4, Xbox One, PC)

The third installment in the Arkham series of the Batman game franchise is already shaping up to be an attractive piece of work. Brucey is back and this time he’s allowed to drive the Batmobile! Rocksteady Studio’s designs look phenomenal, especially the aforementioned Batmobile. The question is whether the Assassin’s Creed style fighting and movement will be updated enough to merit the £49.99 tag this game will likely bear. Arkham City failed to deliver enough for some fans so the pressure is really on for the Dark Knight now.

2. No Man’s Sky (Hello Games/TBD/PS4, PC)

Hello Games, an indie studio from Britain, have absolutely blown the gaming community away with the trailers for No Man’s Sky. They ran away with E3 and have generated enough hype to power Europe through a nuclear winter. The premise of the game is simple enough: you have your own unique planet within an infinite procedurally generated galaxy, as do other players. You can upgrade your spaceship and travel around investigating flora and fauna, whilst occasionally doing battle with hostile forces. This game looks stunning, and will be a welcome addition to the PS4.

3. Evolve (2K Games/Feb 10, 2015/PS4, Xbox One, PC)

From Turtle Rock Studios comes a high-octane group shooter revolving around a team of humans trying to take down a fearsome monster. The game takes place in a wild jungle, as the player-controlled monster must spend the early game hiding from the hunters and preying on smaller creatures to gain strength. If the human hunters fail to track the monster soon enough, it may grow too mighty for them to deal with! This game has a strong premise which will require some masterful balancing to keep the multiplayer fun and fair.

4. Inside (Playdead/Mar 31, 2015/Xbox One)

From the creators of LIMBO, a game which raked in awards and put the absolute shitters up me on a regular basis, comes this new atmospheric 2.5D side-scrolling platformer. The game revolves around a lone free mind, trapped in a world full of brainwashed zombies. The monotone colour pallet and haunting soundtrack conjure up constant anxiety and fear; which combines brilliantly with the gameplay wherein you must avoid many security measures, and other terrifying creatures. An Xbox exclusive which should not be missed.

5. Mortal Kombat X (Warner Bros/Apr 14, 2015/PS4, Xbox One, PC)

One game series which badly needed a makeover is the Mortal Kombat franchise. The last few games have been steaming piles, with zero replay value and very little multiplayer excitement to speak of. Finally, it seems like Netherrealm Studios have pulled their finger out – Mortal Kombat X appears to not only have an engaging plot, but a fine tuning of the combat system which will make it far more fluid than the clunky throwbacks they have been shelling out in the past years.
