Despite the rather goofy name, the Unicorn Overlord demo managed to rope in a whole bunch of interested players, setting the stage for what promises to be a captivating full release that will absolutely steal your life. Slated for launch on March 8th, 2024, the game will grace the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series range. However, the absence of any news regarding a PC version has left a noticeable void — and that’s not likely to change any time soon.
Despite a listing on SEGA’s support page that intriguingly includes Xbox One and Windows as platforms, Unicorn Overlord will not debut on PC (whether that’s Steam or EGS) at launch. This decision aligns with developer Vanillaware’s historical stance, as the studio has not released a game on PC since Fantasy Earth: The Ring of Dominion in 2006, which may have sold so poorly that it scared them off PC entirely. Although Vanillaware has consistently delivered titles for consoles, the humble PC has remained unhallowed ground.
Speculation regarding a PC version was fueled when it was noticed that SEGA’s support page listed Windows as a potential platform. This was previously removed, but as of our last checks in early March, Windows is back as an option.
However, this is likely just a clerical error, as the game also won’t be coming to Xbox One.
The game’s release on an Xbox console for the first time had also sparked hopes among gamers for a potential PC version, especially given the current trend of Xbox games offering PC support through Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud services. Nonetheless, no plans have been disclosed for a PC release or any form of cross-platform functionality for Unicorn Overlord.
The future of Unicorn Overlord on PC remains uncertain. While Atlus and Vanillaware have a track record of introducing their titles to new platforms long after the initial launch — as seen with 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, which made its way to the Switch (really the ideal home for it) in 2022, three years after its debut — PC gamers are left in limbo, like it’s the PS3 an Xbox 360 days all over again. Here’s hoping Vanillware realise what year it is soon.
