Supernatural is a modern TV fantasy drama which first aired in 2005 on the WB network. Following brothers Sam and Dean Winchester (played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles respectively), the show can essentially be summarised by saying if Buffy the Vampire Slayer was instead about two men road-tripping across America. That is a huge oversimplification of the show though, as even though both Supernatural and Buffy essentially follow their protagonists’ hunting monsters, demons and gods, Supernatural also explores other themes, like the familial relationships that the Winchesters develop, both with each other and different characters like their adopted father Bobby (played by Jim Beaver).
And even if Buffy The Vampire Slayer was the one that kickstarted the genre, Supernatural had a bigger budget and lasted a lot longer, with fifteen seasons on top of Buffy’s seven TV seasons (for fans of the latter, her story gets continued in comic form), making Supernatural the longest-running American live-action fantasy show ever. Even though the show concluded in 2020, Supernatural has a loyal fanbase, some of whom wonder if there will possibly ever be a Supernatural: Season 16.
When Is Supernatural: Season 16 Coming Out?
There is no official news about Supernatural: Season 16, only hints and rumours. The story of the Winchester brothers finished on quite the final note. However, this doesn’t mean that the Supernatural universe stopped existing at the end of the show.
The Supernatural franchise has a spin-off show called The Winchesters, which was unfortunately cancelled after one season in May of this year.
Will the Cast Return for Supernatural: Season 16?
The main show of Supernatural has concluded, and though the majority of the cast didn’t return for the first season of The Winchesters, Jensen Ackles served as the narrator of the show, as well as another couple of familiar faces returning.
The spin-off follows the younger John and Mary Winchester – Sam and Dean’s parents, who are played by Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly respectively – with a twist at the season finale that this is actually an alternate universe instead of a prequel. This meant that there were a lot of different possibilities for where the show could go. However, The Winchesters got cancelled by CW as part of “some tough programming decisions” to “reimagine the new CW.”
What Could Supernatural: Season 16 Be About?
Supernatural: Season 15 concluded with a hell of a bang, with Dean dying in a hunt and going to heaven, while Sam raises a family before meeting his brother in the afterlife again. Though the show has been off the air for a couple of years now, there is always that hope that maybe the show will continue.
As Ackles and Padalecki have said in cons and what fans who have followed the show will have noticed, nothing is really final in Supernatural, as the boys have been resurrected time and time again, so there is always a chance, however unlikely, that Supernatural might return.
