For those of you still stuck in that post-new year’s funk, our first Single of the Week proper of the year will grab you by the shoulders and shake the funk off of you whilst wailing in your face. Rise and shine! Wake up and smell the new year! It’s off to a good start.

The shoulder shaking single of which I speak is ‘Vanity Loves Me’ and it comes care of Bristol-based three piece IDestroy. Taken off their upcoming debut EP, and its title track, ‘Vanity Loves Me’ is a straight to the point introduction to this trio; cutting things down to a concise 2 minutes and 16 seconds all fat has been trimmed from this track.

With its punk meets bluesy rock ‘n’ roll riffs, funky strutting bass lines, and solid backbone drive from the drums, the track brings to mind that classic sound of bands like The Runaways by way of the more brash, rough and ready, rawness of riot grrrl bands like Bikini Kill but charged up with the contemporary and youthful fire of a band barely a year together.

It also helps that the bubblegum pop melodies atop the raucous backing are delivered by the band’s singer/guitarist Bec Jevons, whose voice comes across something like Brody Dalle if you managed to sand down some of her husk, but maintained maximum snarl.

Anyhow, with their debut single, from their debut EP, IDestroy have made quite the statement of intent for 2016, kicking it off in style. Sure to be a good year for these newcomers.
