Ruffian Games Acquired By Take-Two, Rebranded As Rockstar Dundee

"Call that a game?! THIS is a game."

Ruffian Games, the developers of the often forgotten Crackdown 2, have been purchased by Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar. As first reported by TheGamer last night, Ruffian Games have since been rebranded as Rockstar Dundee on October 6th, after a deal was finalised between the two parties on October 1st.

How Do We Know This?

A Companies House listing on the UK Government website revealed that Ruffian Games are now known as Rockstar Dundee, and that Take-Two Interactive own, either indirectly or directly, 75% or more of the shares and voting rights within the company.

However, it’s been public knowledge for about a year that Ruffian Games have been working on some projects for Rockstar, with the company quote tweeting a job listing that says they were working on some unspecified Rockstar titles. Clearly, Take-Two already value the work Ruffian were doing if they’ve decided to just buy and rebrand the entire company.

So What Are Rockstar Dundee Working On?

Right now, that’s unclear. The two companies have been working together for the past year on some “unspecified titles for Rockstar Games”, so it could be anything from a new Midnight Club to Bully 2, baby. Alright, those are a bit unlikely, but a man can dream of a world where Bully 2 exists.

However, we can look at Ruffian’s experience to predict where they might be going in their future as Rockstar Dundee. Their biggest project has been Crackdown 2, though they also assisted on the development on Halo: The Master Chief Collection, so we could see Rockstar Dundee working on another open world project, or updating an older title for modern consoles. If this is how we get a re-release of Red Dead Redemption on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, then I’ll take it.
