Playlist of the Week: Brainfeeder 101

Today is a joyous day in the music world. For the first time since 2013, we have a new Thundercat album to absorb. For those unfamiliar, Thundercat is an LA jazz/funk musician who has played an instrumental role in the development of the LA scene as genres have merged and experimentation has reigned supreme. That in mind, Drunk is most certainly the thing you should be listening to today, but just to bolster that, I decided to throw together something of my own to coincide with the release.

This is Brainfeeder 101, an exploration of Thundercat’s parent label, which in and of itself is a beacon of the West Coast scene, spanning various genres with one guiding principal – the weirder the better. It began as a radio show hosted by Flying Lotus in 2007, before evolving into a full label in 2008. In 2010 they formed a partnership with our good friends Ninja Tune in order to gain global distribution and now they’re one of the most fascinating labels in music. Take a nose dive into this playlist and see what you think. You probably won’t like all of it, but you may well fall in love with some of it.
