Playing With Powers – New Video Shows Off Prey’s Arsenal of Abilities

Prey 2017

Bethesda Softworks, publisher of Arkane Studio’s Prey reboot, released a new video on their YouTube channel detailing just a few of the dev team’s favorite powers and approaches to using them.

Aside from the now-borderline-memetic “Mimic Matter” ability, often demonstrated by footage of protagonist Morgan Yu becoming a coffee mug in order to roll through a window slot to get to a button, other alien abilities (known as “Typhon Powers”) are put on display. Several of them are psychic in nature, much like the Typhon creatures themselves, including a psychic blast for raw damage, a mind control ability that makes enemies fight for you, and a dash that leaves a decoy behind to fool any foes who may have been pursuing.

The latter of these abilities especially recalls Arkane’s Dishonored franchise and it’s trademark “Blink” ability, but with the decoy twist. Kinetic Blast also evokes that game’s “Windblast,” a rush of force that sends enemies and objects flying.

The dev team also discusses the lesser-known side of the game’s upgrades and skills, the “Human” abilities. These enhance existing human traits such as speed, strength, firearms handling and even thought, which takes the form of slow-motion, allowing more time for decisions and strategy.

Choosing the right human abilities for your playstyle will be essential, as the video reminds us that if you inject yourself with too much alien DNA to get cool powers, the station’s automated systems will begin to see you as one of them and act accordingly, on top of what previous information has told us about a recurring boss creature that has an easier time finding you the more Typhon powers you use.

If there’s one thing we know about Arkane, it’s that they know how to craft compelling first-person action sandboxes with intricately designed levels and an arsenal of weapons and powers to experiment with. With that in mind, Prey should be a frantic, highly-replayable good time. Give the video a look for more info and be sure to check out our review once the game drops on May 5th of this year.
