The WWE Women’s Championship has undergone many changes throughout the years, being referred to as the Divas Championship for the best part of a bygone era and now being split across both brands of WWE programming with the RAW and SmackDown Live Women’s Championships. However, there is only one legendary female superstar that has gone down in history as the longest reigning Women’s Champion:Â The Fabulous Moolah.
A figure often shrouded in controversy both inside and outside the ring, Moolah held the WWE Women’s Championship for a total of 3,651 days, an astounding reign that actually lasted even longer when counting her run as the NWA Women’s Champion, though WWE choose to disregard that after they bought the championship rights in 1984.
As the inaugural WWE Women’s Champion, Moolah was an integral part of the Rock N’ Wrestling Connection that gave birth to WrestleMania and sports entertainment as we know it. During this time, Moolah would strike up a feud with pop-sensation Cyndi Lauper and bring women’s wrestling to the forefront of the global media as part of their developing rivalry. Lauper was represented by her protégé, Wendi Richter, who would go on to dethrone Moolah in the main event of The Brawl to End It All.
Moolah would later reclaim the Women’s Championship under shady means, after Richter was legitimately screwed out of the championship, never being told that she was set to lose the match against ‘The Spider Lady’ (Moolah in a mask). This led Richter to promptly leave WWE behind with Moolah remaining on top of the division.
Over the years, few have come close to matching Moolah’s titanic championship reign, including the likes of Charlotte Flair, Trish Stratus and Becky Lynch, despite their numerous title victories. Kay Lee Ray is the closest to doing so with an incredible 649 days as NXT UK Women’s Champion, a respectable reign for a brand that hasn’t had much else going for it outside of its women’s division.
