FIFA Ultimate Team: What Does An Extinct Player Mean?

FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) is a game that is packed with terminologies that new players may not understand. One of the most commonly used terms to do with player trading is when a player goes “extinct”.

In FUT, going extinct means that a player is no longer available to buy from the transfer market or is in extremely short supply. This usually happens for one of two reasons.

The first is that EA have taken the player out of their packs, meaning that he is effectively no longer a part of the game. For example, an IF (in form) player who doesn’t get the same status with a new update. The second is after a major update that changes attributes for players, rendering older cards obsolete.

The second reason that players go extinct is that traders hold onto and hoard them in the hopes of selling for a huge profit at some time down the line. You usually see this happen with players whose attributes are better than their overall rating and are available for far cheaper than they should be. Traders will keep hold of these players in the hope that EA will raise their maximum price.

So why is this a problem? Well, when traders hold onto players, it means that some SBCs (squad building challenges) can no longer be completed as there is no way of getting the players to meet certain criteria. This is without mentioning that the market is effectively being held in a vice grip by demand, though that’s kind of how it works for every market going, let alone FUT.

FIFA 21 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. A Legacy Edition is also available for Switch.
