DOOM Eternal: What Are Primevals?

Primed and ready.

Primevals are alluded to in the codex of DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods and may have big ramifications for the storyline and wider universe of DOOM going forward. But what, and who, are they?

It’s revealed in Book Of The Seraphs – Part I that Davoth, the first Dark Lord and ostensibly Satan, is a Primeval, someone created by The Father to steward a realm. In Book Of The Seraphs – Part XI, it’s also revealed that the only thing that can kill a Primeval is another Primeval, and judging from the outcome of Doomguy vs. Davoth, it would appear that Doomguy himself is also a Primeval and therefore the protector of Earth.

However, at the end of The Ancient Gods – Part Two, it’s revealed that Davoth actually created The Father instead, making the codex a little unreliable.

Judging from comments made by Hugo Martin, the game’s director, in a livestream, it seems that there is something above even The Father and Davoth and the true creator of the Primevals, as well as everything in the universe — and maybe even beyond.

After defeating the Khan Maykr in Urdak in the base game, a “Mysterious Voice” shouts “nooo!”. Initially believed to be Davoth, Martin mentions in the stream that it isn’t in fact Davoth and that it’s the “idea that there is something beyond that could be overlooking all of this is what that voice is meant to tease and poke at.” This voice is likely to be the creator of the Primevals and the true big bad of the DOOM universe, which we may explore in future games.

You can speculate on a lot of things with this revelation, including the Wraiths, who gave the people of Argent D’Nur and later Urdark massive power. In The Ancient Gods – Part Two, it’s revealed that the World Spear is in fact a ship filled with Wraiths, meaning that they came from somewhere far away. Is it a stretch to say that the Wraiths are tied to this Mysterious Voice in some way?

Whatever the case may be, we probably have a long to wait to find out all the answers.

DOOM Eternal is available now for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.
