Progress Wrestling’s massive weekender has come to a close, and with that another star(r) has been born, ready to contend for the Progress World Championship with ‘The Product’ David Starr winning the Super Strong Style 16 tournament.
Joining the ranks of Zack Sabre Jr, Aleister Black and Travis Banks, David Starr defeated NXT UK star Jordan Devlin in the finals of the tournament to earn the right to face Walter in the near future.
The annual Super Strong Style tournament boasts an all-star line-up that brings together the biggest names from the BritWres scene, as well as mainstream attractions from NXT and NXT UK. This year was no different, pitting the likes of Chris Brookes, Ilja Dragunov and Aussie Open’s Kyle Fletcher against Travis Banks, Jordan Devlin and air-guitar strumming sensation, Kyle O’Reilly. It’s a series of dream matches and spectacular action — any of you who have never watched one of these tournaments need to set aside a few evenings.
Starr has been an unsung hero of the BritWres scene. Filling in the gap left behind by all the ladies and gents signed to mainstream brands, it’s hard to find a show that isn’t headlined, or stolen by, David Starr. He undoubtedly deserves this moniker, and is certainly a worthy contender to the unstoppable Austrian.
David Starr has continued to define independent wrestling across the world, I’ll be the first to say that this is the start of a new chapter for his career and the entire European indie scene.
This past weekend also featured the final appearance of Jimmy Havoc inside a Progress ring. Havoc defeated Paul Robinson in a brutal deathmatch that left the Ally Pally covered in blood. A fond farewell from Jim Smallman made for a fantastic send-off for Havoc, as he ventures to AEW.
These are three shows that you don’t want to miss out on with some excellent wrestling from all involved, but especially from this year’s winner, David Starr.
