I’ve probably said more than a healthy amount about how incredible and vital the music scene in Manchester is, and how it’s fuelled by a familial, collaborative spirit. Everyone works with everyone, and almost all genres are interconnected. The Mouse Outfit are one of the best examples of that, blending produced hip-hop with instrumental jazz and funk, and using it to recruit some of the best vocalists doing it. The list of rappers and singers who have worked with TMO is impressive, to say the least, and now they’ve added another one – IAMDDB.
Someone at Soundwave described her to me as the ‘Mancunian Erykah Badu’, and it’s a fitting comparison. She’s versatile, with a beautiful singing voice and an impressive flow when she jumps on bars, and while most of her own music falls within the purview of chopped up RnB, she’s lent her vocal chords to everything from hip-hop to drum and bass. This is one of the more soulful Mouse Outfit tracks, and appropriately it also features Fox.
The Mouse Outfit are reportedly working on a new album, which will feature this track, but there are no forward plans to release it as a single. Instead, it’s serving as a taste of what’s to come from the supergroup. Their last album, Step Steadier, was one of the strongest releases of 2015, in any genre, and since then, with the bonds tied by Manchester producers and rappers continuing to grow, there’s almost limitless potential.
