Daily Tune: FD – Always Something (feat. Fox)

For a long time, FD was such an emergent figure in the drum and bass scene that nearly every conversation you had with someone about the genre inevitably led to a mention of him. Whether someone had seen him play a set at SUNANDBASS or heard him feature on an Ulterior Motive track, the summary was the same – get on this, now. This year, FD has been release more material as a solo act. He’s already released one EP – Bridges – and now he’s got another one in the chamber.

Alone with Everybody is expected to drop on the 16th of October on The North Quarter, and to keep us busy until then we’ve just been gifted with the first track (and music video). FD has played around with a lot of different styles, as producers of his ilk often do, but Always Something sees him doing what he does best – crafting jazzy, moody rollers.

Equally at home is Fox, who never fails to beautify a dnb track when he’s brought on board to add a vocal. Sure, his unique blend of Mancunian machine-gun fire and Jamaican dancehall hypemanship sounds right at home on a hefty release by LEVELZ or My Nu Leng, but against a soothing liquid track like this he’s able to coalesce his singing and rapping in a way that threatens to spirit you away into a different dimension. The video itself sits strangely against the track, and highlights the air of sadness in Fox’s vocal. It starts out with a couple having a falling out, and quickly escalates into madness from there, all while Fox himself sits on a park bench laying it all out.
