Netflix just released the official trailer for Charlize Theron’s new film The Old Guard, where she plays an immortal being leading a group of soldiers who have been protecting the mortal world for centuries. Theron is joined by co-stars KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Luca Marinelli and Marwan Kenzari. In the trailer, there is a glimpse of Theron’s character in what looked to be the witch trials, which means she’s been alive since the 17th century (or maybe even longer). When the team takes on an emergency mission, their abilities are exposed, and now, everyone wants a slice of immortal pie.

The Old Guard is based on the comic book of the same name, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who is known for her films Love and Basketball and The Secret Life of Bees. The Old Guard is a slight departure from the usual type of films she makes, but this may be a good thing, giving the film more layers so it won’t end up being another derivative action flick.

Theron has played her fair share of bad-ass female characters, albeit with mixed results. While her character Furiosa was in a critically-acclaimed movie like Mad Max: Fury Road, she also played Aeon Flux in a movie that tanked (it has 9% on Rotten Tomatoes). The Old Guard looks promising, but I guess we will have to wait till July 10, 2020 to see which direction it ends up in.
