New Music: BBC Sound of 2015 Longlist Revealed

bbc sound of 2015

Rae Morris

Yet another youthful person to get my age-related bitterness trigger up in arms, perhaps more so because damn it, she’s so close to my own age with her being 22. You double-crossed me 4th dimensional beings! Anyoo, Rae is an exceptionally talented singer-songwriter from Blackpool, and is another one who has wasted no time in her short musical life in getting a name for herself through hard work; numerous singles and EPs under her belt with a debut album, Unguarded due for release in 2015. The time is right for Rae Morris’s brand of highly powerful, spacious, and soulful balladry.

Raury

It’s hard not to be fired up with bitterness when exposing these artists to you. I feel like I should keep them secret, until they are a more acceptable age for being this talented so I won’t feel so bad, but the BBC went and fucked that up didn’t they? Bastards. Ah well, here I am, and so I should be, telling about the phenomenal Raury who manages to blend a keen ear for rap, psychedelia, hip hop, folk, electronica, and the more than four corners of world music. Oh, and throw in a skill for powerful dynamics and melody.

Shamir

As with most young musicians these days, and young people in generally, they are fed music through a kaleidoscope that can see them listening quite happily, on after the other, mainstream pop, indie folk, punk, underground electronics, and more. So of course Shamir can often be found listening to Rihanna and Mac DeMarco, having previously played in a punk band called Anorexia, whilst churning out as a solo artist music that fidgets between 80s pop, broken synths, basic drum machines, hip hop funk, and the sound of Prince and Azealia Banks getting down.

Shura

If ever there were some handy talents to have at your disposal for taking control of your own creative output and future as a solo artist, then singing, producing, remixing, and video editing would be damn high on the lit for getting your name out there, and putting your signature to everything you touch – whether your own work or that of others. Well, it’s a good thing Shura isn’t half a dab hand at all of the above. Not only that, but her Russian/English heritage, drum and bass DJ brother, influences like Janet Jackson, Madonna, and Blood Orange, oh, and some time spent exploring and absorbing the wider world. It all adds up to Shura’s elemental, emotional, and explorative future-R&B.

Slaves

It wouldn’t be a ‘Sound of Anything’ without some certified rock injected into proceedings, and Slaves are that surefire rock n roll injection. Despite including only two members, Slaves make positively as much noise as they possibly can to shake the Sound of 2015 list to its core by channelling the spirits of Baddies, Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, The Horrors pre-shoegaze/psychedelia/the ’80s, and vocals that call to mind the fury-fuelled blend of Gallows’ Frank Carter, Jamie T, and Farris Rotter
