Apex Legends Pathfinder Guide: Abilities, Strengths & Weaknesses

Pathfinder is one of the most unique Legends in Apex Legends, so here's everything you need to know about him.

Pathfinder guide

Pathfinder in Apex Legends is the friendly robot with a smiley face literally on his chest. Many favour Wraith or Bangalore to jump into this battle royale title. But I’m a proponent of this mechanical mystery.

He is categorized as a support character and labeled as a forward scout; the latter is more descriptive. With his abilities, he is easily the most mobile character in the entire roster. Perfect if you want to venture off without your team and get back just as quickly. Although none of his abilities are offensive, they can put you in a position to envelope your enemies before they can say “Fortnite”.

Apex Legends Pathfinder Bio

Pathfinder

“Pathfinder is the picture of optimism, despite his circumstances. A MRVN (Mobile Robotic Versatile eNtity) modified to specialize in location scouting and surveying, he booted up decades ago in an abandoned laboratory with no idea who created him or why. With only his MRVN designation to hint at his identity, Pathfinder set off in search of his creator.

“Pathfinder has learned much in his travels since then (like how to make a mean Eastern Leviathan Stew) but hasn’t come any closer to finding his creator. Still, he’s never given up hope, and has joined the Apex Games to gain a following–and hopefully draw the attention of his maker. In the meantime, he remains enthusiastic and helpful, always ready to make new friends (then shoot them).”

Apex Legends Pathfinder Abilties

Apex Legends Pathfinder abilities

Tactical: Grappling Hook – Pathfinder is equipped with Respawn Entertainment’s signature feature from their previous Titanfall games: the grappling hook. With it you can zip across the map at Mach speeds, it can attach to any surface and yank you away in that direction. This ability is Pathfinder’s bread and butter, particularly in a fight. It can allow you to get to the high ground, get a good vantage point and flank enemies. But beware it does make a noise so enemies can be alerted to its use.

But we haven’t even reached the best part. Unlike many other games that contain grappling abilities, Pathfinder’s hook doesn’t just pull you straight to where you pointed. It acts more like a real life tether allowing you to swing in any direction. Using this you can fire one into the ceiling and look forward to swing in an arc just like Spider-Man. Swinging allows you to increase momentum rapidly and if you slide upon landing, you can reach the highest speed possible.

Passive Ability: Insider Knowledge – Pathfinder can also hack into survey beacons, which can be found scattered around the map, and usually on top of a building. Be aware that their locations can change with every match but will mostly be found in a few locations, once you get to know them it will be easier to find in each match. Once located use your grapple or clamber to reach it, interact with the device and voila: you’ve hacked a survey beacon. Now you will see a green circle on your map indicating the next zone — your whole team can also see it so don’t worry about communication. This little ability really allows you to plan your next move — you’ll know exactly where to go before anyone else does.

Ultimate: Zipline Gun – Ziplines are a great way for your team to get around the map rapidly, some locations even have many of them zig zagging between buildings. But as Pathfinder you don’t need to find one for your team because you have a zipline strapped to your rear gears. All you need to do is activate your Ultimate Ability and you can fire a zipline across vast distances. It’s great for repositioning your team or crossing an area without having to run through buildings. The best part is that Pathfinder’s Ultimate has the fastest charge time in the game at 1 minute and 30 seconds. Which is more than twice as fast as Wraith, the character with the other team based repositioning ability, and four times faster than Lifeline’s care package. This, of course, allows you to use it after almost every fight and scavenging run, so use it liberally.

How To Play As Pathfinder In Apex Legends

As strong as Pathfinder is, he does have his downfalls, sometimes literally. First off, if you haven’t mastered his grapple ability you can land yourself in some sticky situations dropping directly in front of the enemy or where you can’t get back to your team without being shot. In regards to activating survey beacons Pathfinder stands completely still for a few seconds, so be absolutely sure there aren’t any snipers waiting around otherwise you could be dropped in a heartbeat.

The worst part about Pathfinder is that both his grapple and zipline can be incredibly loud, which if heard can turn your clever flank into the enemy’s. As a final note, deploying the zipline can also be very conspicuous allowing enemies to know exactly where you are going, so use it wisely.

Mr. Adorable is really best suited for sniper rifles, so whether you prefer a Triple Take or Longbow, keep an eye out for scopes and mods so that when you do find one you aren’t under equipped. As for Pathfinder’s second weapon I’d recommend an assault rifle, submachine gun or, if you’re feeling very brave, a pistol. Since sniper rifles don’t use a ton of ammo it may be prudent to use two weapons with the same ammo type so you don’t end up wasting an inventory slot on ammo for just a sniper rifle.

While using Pathfinder’s grapple, you can jump to gain significant momentum then fly in any direction. This technique can be difficult and there’s only a few frames where this will work, from the point where Pathfinder stretches his arm out to when the grapple pulls you in. It is not a large window but mastering this little gem can really give you the edge when it comes to flanking opponents or escaping combat.

While using a sniper rifle may be recommended, there is an alternative. If you feel very comfortable with the character you can swap out either weapon with a shotgun and play a lot more aggressively. By using the grapple to swing around buildings and over walls you can cover huge ground and land right behind an enemy to blast them away with a shotgun.

As a final note, Pathfinder can actually grapple directly onto an enemy, which will pull you directly to them, and you can then deliver a quick melee to do additional damage. Of course, pairing this technique with a shotgun can end an enemy swiftly.

From our Apex Legends review:

“Even the most jaded of battle royale fans will find their interest rejuvenated by Apex Legends thanks to Respawn’s attention to detail, superior gunplay, and fantastic innovations, though the loot boxes and progression system certainly need addressing.”
