The islands of Animal Crossing New Horizons are packed with a bevy of flora and fauna for you to discover (and then pile up at Blathers’ door), but the game doesn’t always tell you how to discover or where to find the blighters. In terms of the hermit crabs, it’s all about getting a nice surprise.
Hermit crabs are basically crabs that live in their little shell-houses, and as such can pass for the regular shells you find on the beach, so you may accidentally miss them.
They tend to come out at night, so make your way to the nearest beach and start trawling the shoreline with your net equipped. Once they are rumbled, they will try to skitter away, sometimes even immediately back into the sea. Be quick by pressing A with your net out and you will manage to snag one.
You can then either display the hermit crab in its cage, sell it, or turn it in to Blathers for his museum.
The hermit crab can sometimes be part of the Nook Miles+ program, so it’s good to know where you can find the little insular critters for some easy Miles. Curiously, the game recognises them as a bug as you use your net to catch them, so this will add to any bug hunting Miles you may need to tick off.
Animal Crossing New Horizons is out now for the Nintendo Switch.
