Hellsing Watch Order: TV Series, Ultimate & The Dawn

Hellsing 2001
Hellsing 2001

In Hellsing, The Hellsing Organisation protects Britain from supernatural threats by employing Alucard, an ancient vampire whose approach to public safety resembles a particularly enthusiastic demolition project. Trying to figure out which season or spin-off to watch could also demolish your brain.

Despite appearances, Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate are not consecutive seasons. They adapt the same opening material before heading in markedly different directions, so the best route depends on whether you want the complete manga story or every animated interpretation.

For your first watch, we’d recommend Hellsing Ultimate → Hellsing: The Dawn (optional) → Hellsing (2001, optional alternate version). Read on for more information.

What Order Should You Watch Hellsing In?

Order Title/Year Episodes and viewing instructions
1 Hellsing Ultimate (2006–2012) Essential. Watch all 10 feature-length OVAs in numerical order. This retells the story from the beginning and adapts the complete main manga.
2 Hellsing: The Dawn (2011–2012) Optional. Watch the three short prequel episodes after Ultimate. They explore Walter and Alucard’s wartime past but adapt an unfinished side story.
3 Hellsing (2001–2002) Optional alternate continuity. Watch all 13 TV episodes after Ultimate, or first if you specifically prefer release order. It introduces an anime-original antagonist and ending.
4 Psalm of Darkness / Digest for Freaks Skippable promotional material. These are preview or condensed releases, not extra story chapters.

The complete Ultimate production consists of OVAs I–X, with The Dawn Episodes 1–3 included separately as bonus material. Some streaming catalogues misleadingly display 13 episodes under Ultimate because they append the three Dawn shorts. There are still only ten main OVAs.

If you want the essential stuff and nothing more, just watch Hellsing Ultimate.

Is Hellsing Ultimate A Sequel Or Reboot?

Hellsing Ultimate is a new adaptation, not Season 2. Confusing? Yes!

The 2001 television series began while Kohta Hirano’s manga was still being published. Its early episodes use several characters and incidents from the manga, but it eventually creates an original storyline involving Incognito.

Ultimate starts again with Seras Victoria meeting Alucard, then follows the manga’s conflict involving Millennium through to its proper conclusion. It assumes no knowledge of the earlier programme, so watching the TV series first is unnecessary.

The original series still has value as a brisker, moodier alternative with a distinctive soundtrack. It simply leads to a different ending. Gonzo’s own catalogue confirms its 13-episode run from October 2001 to January 2002.

Should You Watch The Dawn Before Ultimate?

No. Its events occur earlier, but it works better after Ultimate.

The Dawn is set during the Second World War and follows a younger Walter alongside Alucard. Strict chronology would put it first, but it expects familiarity with people and organisations gradually revealed by the main story.

More importantly, the underlying manga prequel was never completed. The three animated shorts offer background rather than a self-contained beginning, so opening with them means starting halfway through an explanation that never finishes. Bold, perhaps, but not especially helpful.

Are There Any Hellsing Movies Or Necessary Recaps?

No films belong in the watch order, and the promotional recaps can be skipped.

Psalm of Darkness is associated with the 2001 anime’s promotion, while Digest for Freaks condenses early Ultimate material. Neither advances the plot.

The ten numbered Ultimate OVAs are all required, however. Their extended runtimes can make them look like films in some catalogues, but they form one continuous adaptation. OVA X completed the series on 26 December 2012.

Where Can You Watch Hellsing?

As of October 2026, Hellsing Ultimate is available in the UK by Crunchyroll subscription and for digital purchase through Apple TV Store. The 2001 Hellsing is listed through the Crunchyroll Amazon Channel and for purchase from Apple. The Amazon channel costs extra and is not standard Prime.

Both Hellsing Ultimate and the 2001 series are available on Crunchyroll in the US. The older series is also listed through the separate Crunchyroll Amazon Channel and for purchase from Apple TV Store.

Check whether a service’s supposed Episodes 11–13 are those bonuses rather than three miraculous additional episodes of Ultimate.
