State of Play: PlayStation Announce Their Own Nintendo Direct Style Shows

State of Play

PlayStation have just announced that they will be holding presentations from now on in a style not too dissimilar to Nintendo’s Directs that will focus on new PS4 and PSVR games, as well as updates for those already in the works.

State of Play will begin on March 25th, 14:00 PST/21:00 GMT and will be watchable on pretty much all of the official PlayStation socials; VOD will be available for anyone who can’t watch it live.

No dates were announced beyond Monday’s State of Play, but they will be “throughout the year”.

This makes a lot of sense the more you think about it. Sony have been distancing themselves away from trade shows like E3 and didn’t even put on their own PSX last year. Directs almost always generate a lot of buzz without the need for a “middle man”, so it should be no surprise at all to see other big names in the business changing tack. Xbox doing something similar with Inside Xbox, too.

Of course this doesn’t mean there won’t be a PSX this year — Sony have yet to confirm anything on that front — or that they are dropping big public presentations completely, but it’s certainly an interesting move.
