5 WWE Superstars Who Should Steal WrestleMania Weekend

It's a pivotal time of year, where wrestlers can rise up and make themselves immortal.

WresteMania weekend is less than a fortnight away, which for those superstars lucky enough to be featured on either NXT TakeOver: New York or WrestleMania itself, could mean big things for their career going forward. Both cards are already shaping up to be two of the most stacked in recent memory, with WrestleMania in particular promising to put the spotlight on superstars who have put in the work and managed to get over like no other.

Of course, not everyone featured is destined to come out looking stronger than ever, after all for every winner there has to be a loser. Regardless of where they are on the card, each superstar has equal opportunity to steal the entire weekend by putting on their equivalent to a Savage/Steamboat mat classic. Today, we bring you the five individuals that deserve to come out with that huge rub, those that despite the result should make the most of this WrestleMania and be put on a pedestal for the rest of 2019.

5. Drew McIntyre

The Scottish Psychopath seemed to be on the road to superstardom a few months back, clearly presented as one of the top talents on Monday Night Raw and definitely a future Universal Champion. While his presence hasn’t exactly diminished, he’s certainly taken a step down from the main event scene and slunk back into the mid-card.

In spite of this, Drew has been placed in a big-time match against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania this year, which considering how highly WWE regard Roman, is a massive credit to McIntyre. The match between these two heavy hitters itself promises to be physical and intense, and as a betting man, I’d put my money on Reigns coming out as a victor.

Whether you’re a fan of Roman Reigns or not, it’s hard to deny that he should be given a WrestleMania victory to complete his little feel-good comeback from battling leukaemia. But who’s to say that McIntyre can’t be given a huge rub from this in the process? Drew’s potential remains the same as it was a few months back, with a potentially fresh Universal Title picture on the horizon, Drew could certainly position himself in the discussion for future contenders should he put in a great performance against Reigns at Mania.

Being McIntyre’s first ever singles match at a WrestleMania, this is bound to be a fantastic moment for him in his career. Why not make it memorable by allowing him to show his in-ring range in a 15-20 minute brawl with Roman?

4. Johnny Gargano/Adam Cole

Whether you’re sitting in the corner of Johnny Wrestling or aligning yourself with The Undisputed Era next weekend, both of these contenders deserve to put on a cracker in the main event of Takeover. With Tommaso Ciampa now sidelined with an injury, the title picture has been left open for Gargano and Adam Cole to slip in and potentially steal the entire WrestleMania weekend with an incredible match.

Right now, there couldn’t be a better two superstars to fill the enormous gap left behind by Ciampa and lead the yellow brand into a new era as champion. It’s genuinely difficult to pick a winner for this match, but regardless of whoever walks out with the title, both superstars should come out looking like the best f’n performers on the planet today.

With Gargano being given some exposure on the main roster, I would assume that he could be on his way to Monday Night Raw or SmackDown Live sooner than we think, thus Adam Cole could be leaving Takeover with goldie. At risk of Gargano getting lost in the post-Mania fray on either brand, it would be worth giving him heaps of momentum coming out of this match. Being presented as more than just a plucky underdog would benefit him during the transition period, which as demonstrated recently with the likes of EC3, Lacey Evans and Heavy Machinery, can be a real tricky process.

On the other hand, Adam Cole hasn’t exactly been top of the roster over the past year, and this sudden escalation into the title picture might not seem as natural as it could with all of the fanbase. Giving him a career making match against Gargano and the big title win on Mania weekend could go a long way in winning over the last few people that don’t quite get the hype.

Either way, this match is a win-win for us fans and for the two superstars involved as well.

3. Finn Bálor

As of this writing, Finn Bálor hasn’t been confirmed to appear on the main card of WrestleMania 35, for all we know he could be announcing his entry into the AMBR next week. The natural assumption would be that Finn would seek redemption against Bobby Lashley and look to recapture the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMana.

Taking the IC title away from Finn heading into their big weekend baffles me, Lashley isn’t exactly top-tier and doesn’t come across like a huge threat considering Bálor has managed to defeat him in various tag and handicap matches. Nevertheless, Finn needs that big win at a WrestleMania whilst maybe even giving the Demon persona a debut too.

It would make for quite the spectacle to finally witness the Demon’s WrestleMania entrance, which fans of Prince Devitt’s work in NJPW and Progress Wrestling would tell you makes for quite the moment. Lashley could probably afford to take a loss at WrestleMania this year too, so giving Bálor this much-deserved WrestleMania moment is something that should definitely be on the cards.

Again, with the main event picture being shaken up, this could be the pedestal that Finn needs to finally break into the Universal Title frame and live up to the hype that everyone expected since day one.

Editor’s note: We now know that Finn Bálor will be facing Bobby Lashley for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania. So, fingers crossed WWE get it right come the big event.

2. Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins

The challenger to Brock’s Universal Championship absolutely needs to win the big one this year. Seth Rollins has been a borderline flag-bearer for Monday Night Raw ever since turning face and defeating Triple H a few years back. It seems things haven’t quite come together at the right time for Rollins to truly live up to his potential. Now, with a Rumble victory under his belt, what better time for him to ‘slay the beast’ and provide a fresh face for fans to consider the Universal champ?

Although without any current updates on Lesnar’s contractual agreements with WWE, there’s no guarantee that Rollins is walking away with the title. After all, it seems that whenever there is the ideal challenger to finally quell the dominance of Bork Laser, he still happens to walk away with the victory after an F-5 or 20.

If WWE creative had any sense, they’d know that it needs to be Seth. He needs this to establish himself as a top-tier talent, a face of a generation, and as fans, we need this to finally put an end to the tedium of Brock’s title reign. Should Seth come away with the big win, then there’s nothing stopping him from making 2019 his year, where he takes WWE forward into an era that can rival the hype of AEW and the sheer talent of NJPW.

Seth. Needs. To. Win.

1. Ronda Rousey

So we’re all in agreement that Becky Lynch is winning the Raw Women’s Title in the main event, yeah? Whether you’re on The Man bandwagon or not, it’s pretty clear that Ronda is going to drop the title at WrestleMania, in lieu of her rumoured departure in the coming months.

Rousey has been a shining star for WWE all year long, and it would be a shame for her to suddenly drop any and all notoriety with the audience after taking this inevitable loss to Becky. I would love to see one last cracker of a match on the big stage before she sets off on her next venture. Hopefully, if the rumours are indeed true, we’ll see Rousey perform in a WWE ring again in the future, one last stunning performance would go a long way in ensuring that she could come back and look as strong as she did upon her debut.

This triple threat is going to be monumental for the women’s division and all three of the superstars are involved in what should be a terrific main event. Becky is naturally going to come out of this match as one of the most over female performers of all time, but that shouldn’t mean Rousey deserves to look like a chump in the meantime. Let her have this fantastic performance to go out on.
