The blossoming friendship/business arrangement/full-blown bromance between Michael Bolton and The Lonely Island has brought us Jack Sparrow, a hilarious cameo in Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping and now this, the latest Netflix original comedy: Michael Bolton’s Big, Sexy Valentine’s Day Special.
If that sounds absurd to you, it is. This is a Lonely Island venture, after all, and it contains everything you’d expect: lots of songs, more than a few special guest appearances and plenty of laughs.
The show plays out like a self aware charity fundraiser, with Michael Bolton staging a charity telethon in order to get people to shag, make babies and save Christmas. Yes, you read that sentence correctly. Think Children in Need but without the emotional blackmail after every skit.
Instead, we get a who’s who of comedians and stars turning up to make the whole show even more bizarre and hilarious. We’ve got The Lonely Island guys (because of course), Andy Richter, Sarah Silverman,Eric Andre, Will Forte, Chris Parnell, Maya Rudolph and many more.
But the true star of the show, as the name would imply, is Michael Bolton himself. He’s a brilliant straight man to the eccentric and oftentimes ludicrous performances offered by the rest of the cast; straight faced and stoic whilst interrupting Sarah Silverman singing about pubes.
The songs themselves are actually the weakest link, just because there are some duds mixed amongst some genuine gold. The aforementioned pubes song performed by Sarah Silverman and Randall Park? Crass, but gold. However, Maya Rudolph singing a self-referential song about key changes making music sound sexy? It’s a joke that goes on for too long. Still, at least we get to see Lord Boltron himself bust out a piano version of Jack Sparrow.
If you’re looking for something romantic to watch with your partner come Valentine’s Day, this might not be for you. If you’re sick of the soppy gush that pours out of the woodwork at this time of the year and want something a little different, Michael Bolton’s Big, Sexy Valentine’s Day Special is a good choice.
If anything, it sure beats going the cinema to watch 50 Shades.
