Guy Beats Ocarina of Time Dungeons Blindfolded, We Find a New Hero.

Ocarina of Time blindfolded

I can’t speak for all gamers, but I’m fairly sure most of us think we’re the dog bollocks when it comes to our favourite old games. No game is seen through those rose-tinted glasses as much as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Like me, you probably think you are awesome at this game. You are not. Nor am I. None of us are, because of the simple fact that we are not Runnerguy2489.

As the globally celebrated stream-fest Awesome Games Done Quick 2015 came to a close, many people had impressed the public by speed-running their favourite games to raise money for charity. It was at this time that Runnerguy2489 stepped up to the plate, blindfold at the ready.

This man beat 3 Ocarina of Time dungeons whilst blindfolded. Using incredible sequences of perfect angling, audio cues, glitches and sheer memory, he was able to navigate himself through all of the perils that Young Link must face. The kicker is that he didn’t even do it slowly or methodically, he absolutely smashes through it, using tricks that most people would find difficult to perfect – whether or not they were visually challenged. Runnerguy explains near the start that Ocarina of Time has fantastic audio for its time, and he can clearly determine where he is thanks to the different sounds of grass, gravel, dust etc. Despite this, it doesn’t change how impressive it is when he tightrope walks along a section of underwater invisible wall to bypass almost a whole dungeon.

My favourite part of this is that it can, and should, be appreciated by people who are not invested heavily in video-games. It is a marvel of hand-eye coordination, (or is it hand-ear?) and demonstrates not only the human capacity for pattern recognition but a strong altruistic community, ready and willing to help those less fortunate.
Personally I am looking forward to Awesome Games Done Quick 2016 when our editor Jimmy D has pledged that he will play through the entire of Alien: Isolation only using his feet.
