It wouldn’t be an RPG if there wasn’t a quest that made you go “well, how the hell am I supposed to do that?” The Stolen Throne in Dragon’s Dogma 2 might just be one of those quests, as it requires you to use the game’s mechanics and listen to the instructions being given to you, otherwise you might not know what you need to do. Basically, if you’ve been skipped too much dialogue, you’re screwed.

The Stolen Throne is a main quest you receive from Captain Brant after you’ve completed a couple of his other quests like Monster Culling or Disa’s Plot. Basically, you’re tasked with infiltrating a masquerade dance hosted by the false Sovran of Vernmouth in order to try and ascertain the Sovran’s true identity, with Brant giving you the Eventide Mask when you accept the quest. You will need that later.

Before infilitrating the masquerade ball, you’ll need to obtain a set of royal clothes, and there’s multiple ways you can go about this. Firstly, you can complete the quest “The Ornate Box”, which be found next to the market stalls in the Vernmouth’s main merchant square. You’ll receive the Courtly Tunic and Courtly Breeches upon completion. Secondly, you could take a set of courtly clothes from one of the houses in The Noble Quarter, as several contain either the tunic or the breeches. Finally, you can buy both Courtly items from Philbert’s Sundries, but with a combined cost of 305,000G, this is a fool’s errand.

One last thing before attempting The Stolen Throne is that you should also accept the quest “A Magisterial Amenity”, which requires completion of the quest “The Caged Magistrate”. After freeing Waldhar, wait a day and then visit him in the vaults under The Gracious Hand, and he’ll give you a quest to find a pair of his glasses in the masquerade hall. We’re going there anyway, so you may as well kill two birds with one stone now.

Anyway, equip your Courtly clothes and the Eventide Mask, then head over to the Masquerade Hall in The Royal Quarter. Masquerades aren’t held every night, so you may need to wait on the benches outside the Royal Quarter, or at the Inn inside the merchant quarter. Once the Masquerade is on and popping, head to the center dancefloor, and a short cutscene will play of a mysterious figure taking a side hallway towards the backrooms.

Not those backrooms, the rooms at the back of the hall.

Follow the figure towards the back, and be sure to pick up the Exquisite Spectacles for the quest “A Magisterial Amenity” in the left-hand room as you walk into the hall. As for where the figure went, it feels like they just up and disappeared, but closer inspection of the wall between the two rooms will reveal a hidden door — one so sneaky that I spent longer than I’d care to admit trying to find it. Simply go through the door, follow the pathway laid out and you’ll have completed The Stolen Throne.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is available now on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X & S.
