We can all agree that the Resident Evil franchise is on a roll right now, with Capcom hitting the mark every time from Resident Evil 7 up to the latest Resident Evil 4 Remake. The main storyline’s most recent entry, Resident Evil Village, was also highly acclaimed worldwide, making fans hyped for Resident Evil 9.
As the Winters family’s story comes to a close, the series’ ninth installment has the potential to explore new avenues and bring back beloved characters. To know what the survival horror franchise has in store for you, here’s everything you should know about Resident Evil 9.
When Is Resident Evil 9 Coming Out?
Currently, there’s no official release date for Resident Evil 9. Nonetheless, leaks are circulating online that Resident Evil 9 will be released by 2025 and announced in 2024. While the dates match the window between Resident Evil’s main entry releases, you should take them with a grain of salt since they’re still unofficial.
On the other hand, Capcom revealed several of their upcoming games in the Capcom Showcase 2023 last June. Unfortunately, Resident Evil 9 wasn’t included in this showcase. However, they did announce a new VR mode for RE4 Remake, which’ll be playable on PlayStation VR2.
What Will Resident Evil 9 Be About?
Even though Resident Evil 9’s plot hasn’t been revealed yet, several clues and plot threads were left hanging for them to tackle. Based on where Resident Evil Village ended, Resident Evil 9 may follow Chris Redfield investigating the BSAA’s use of bioweapons. They might even get legacy characters to join him, like Jill Valentine, Leon Kennedy, and Claire Redfield, or maybe introduce new characters altogether.
You might also think Rosemary Winters could return for Resident Evil 9, but that idea is now foggy. Director Kento Kinoshita told IGN that they made the Shadows of Rose DLC to conclude the Winters family saga. This could mean that Rose won’t appear in Resident Evil 9 as the franchise focuses on a new story and other characters.
Meanwhile, there are rumors that Resident Evil 9 is titled “Apocalypse” and will be set in a “ghost town” in Western America. There were even mentions of facing mythological creatures like Wendigos. Then again, these are mere speculations, as the game itself may take a completely different direction.
What Platforms Will Resident Evil 9 Be On?
The Resident Evil games aren’t platform exclusives, so Resident Evil 9 will likely be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox X & S. There’s a slight chance it follows RE4 Remake’s footsteps and support older-gen consoles, like the PlayStation 4. But considering it’s years away from release, Resident Evil 9 may only be available on new-gen consoles by then. Resident Evil 9 may also appear on the next generation of Nintendo Switch, but we’ll have to wait and see how powerful that console will be.
Who Will Develop Resident Evil 9?
It’s pretty much a given that Capcom will develop Resident Evil 9. Since its inception, Capcom has made and published all the main entries of the Resident Evil franchise. Given the recent Resident Evil main games and remakes’ success, Capcom will likely continue the momentum with Resident Evil 9, as long as they don’t fall into the same pit that Resident Evil 6 did.
